an ode to montauk: summer 2019
last summer my family was lucky enough to spend all of july in montauk, the furthest point east in the hamptons. it was my first time there, and after the 8 hour drive from maryland the first word that came to mind was magical. montauk is a summer dream with easy going people, a deep surfer culture, and all the fresh local foods that i love so much. i figured it was definitely worthy of a post as it’s been one of my favorite places thus far. soooo, here are my montauk highlights:
my favorite restaurant which happened to be less than five minutes from our house was duryea’s lobster deck, a fresh modern seafood restaurant with the best vibes and the best views. if you’re in montauk (or anywhere in the hamptons for an extended period of time) this is your place. the lobster cobb is to die for, the baked clams are close to perfect, and the grilled octopus is the best i’ve had. something to note is that they don’t take reservations on the weekend, so get there early to hold a spot.
a daily ritual in montauk was going to the ditch plains beach with my dogs, where they’d run through the water and wrestle with other pups in the early morning sun. my dogs had never been in the ocean before so this time with them at the beach was incredibly special. although the messy cleanup post beach with all of the sand pouring out of the car was chaotic, i wouldn’t trade it for anything.
the views in montauk are completely stunning. one morning we woke up extra early to go to the light house and watched the sun rise there. something about the colors of the sunrise and sunsets paired with the perfectly blue water and greenery here and there makes for an ideal combination. if you look reaaaally hard you can see my sister and i on the rocks :)
as someone who went to camp for 9 years, i had never really experienced going to the beach that often, and montauk definitely didn’t disappoint. they had so many cute food trucks and trinkets in the parking lot including the ditch witch, a popular food truck with everything from iced coffee to salads to wraps to ice cream. this was the place that surfers would come to straight out of the water, and i absolutely loved the feel of it. in the photo above is the cutest lemonade and ice cream truck parked in one of the lots, and i really loved the retro summer look of it.
the best part of the whole month was spending unbelievable quality time with my family that i’ll never forget or take for granted. we laughed, ate great food, got one too many sunburn, and experienced the most beautiful sunsets. to anyone looking to spend some time out east (or if you’re just obsessed with lobster rolls), i highly recommend.
